In The New York Times this morning it was reported that both houses of Congress are trying to legalize and tax internet “gambling”–namely poker–overturning the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA) from 2006.
But, let’s get a couple of things straight.
1. Poker is only gambling if you want it to be. That’s what the main lobby in DC–the Poker Players Alliance contends–and as a player, I can say that is the truth.
2. The government never stopped anybody from gambling on anything anywhere–online or live.
3. The proposed bills don’t allow for betting on sports, but hell, that’s dumb–they should think of all the tax revenue they’ll be losing.
4. Football season is right around the corner and if anyone anywhere thinks that many Americans won’t be gambling on it, then they are not paying attention. It’s as easy going to the nearest sports bar to deal “with a guy” or processing a payment to an offshore sportsbook via Western Union or through other means. Trust me. I’ve done both.
5. Gambling is as American as apple pie and tax evasion. Poker is an American game.
BTW: It’s easier to load your poker account at FullTilt.com or wherever than it is to load your sportsbook account.
